Outdoor Tool Balancers: Rust-Free TECNA Balancers for EV Charging, Forklift Bays and Car Washes

Most tool balancers are built for a heated factory floor. Put one outside — over a forklift charger in an open loading bay, at an EV charging point, on an airport apron or in a car wash — and the problems start: steel cable rusts, housings corrode, and cold stiffens everything. An outdoor tool balancer is built for exactly those places.

TECNA’s OUTDOOR line (the OD models) takes the balancers and retractors you already know from the standard range and rebuilds them with rust-free materials inside and out, with a working temperature range of -40 °F to 140 °F (-40 °C to +60 °C). This guide covers what makes them different, where they are used, and how to pick the right model.

What makes a tool balancer an outdoor balancer

From the outside an OD balancer looks like its standard sibling, apart from the OUTDOOR badge. The difference is in the materials:

  • Powder-coated aluminium housing, resistant to oxidation and chemical corrosion. On the zero-gravity models the housing is also ribbed and sealed.
  • Rustproof and stainless-steel exterior parts on every model, and on the zero-gravity balancers rustproof and stainless-steel interior parts as well.
  • A rope that will not rust. The smaller retractors use synthetic fibre rope instead of steel cable: polypropylene on the 9310OD–9323OD and Dyneema high-strength fibre on the 9336LOD–9350OD. The zero-gravity balancers use wire rope that is stainless steel throughout.
  • Stainless-steel screw-lock carabiner, the part that rusts first on a standard balancer left outside.
  • Working temperatures from -40 °F to 140 °F (-40 °C to +60 °C), so the same unit works through a northern winter and a hot summer apron.

Everything else stays the same as the standard line: adjustable capacity, safety suspension, an adjustable stroke limiter, and on models over 3 kg (6.6 lb) a safety device that blocks the balancer if the drum spring ever breaks.

Where outdoor balancers are used

TECNA designed the OD line around five groups of applications. All of them have the same problem: a heavy cable, hose or connector that needs to hang within reach, stay off the ground, and survive outside conditions.

Forklift and electric pallet truck charging

Charging cables dragged across a dock floor get crushed by wheels, kinked and wet. An outdoor balancer or retractor over the charger keeps the cable and connector up and in reach, returns it out of the way after each truck, and keeps working in unheated warehouses, cold docks and open yards.

EV charging: public, commercial and fleet

Charging cables get heavier as power goes up. At public, workplace and fleet charging points, an EV charging cable retractor takes that weight off the driver, keeps the cable off the pavement where it gets run over, and returns the connector to a tidy rest position. Because the OD materials are rust-free, they suit open-air charging bays where standard balancers corrode. See also our page on EV charging cable management.

Electric bus and truck depots

Depot charging for e-buses and e-trucks uses thick, heavy cables, and a driver may handle them dozens of times a shift. A larger outdoor zero-gravity balancer lets the operator position the connector at any height with almost no effort, then leave it there.

Example: a transit depot charges its electric buses overnight in an open yard. Each high-power charger has a thick cable that has to reach the inlet on the side or roof line of the bus, then go back up out of the way so it isn’t driven over, dragged through slush or left lying in the lane. An overhead cable retractor kit holds the cable up, lets the driver pull the connector down to the inlet, locks it at that height, and lifts it back clear when charging is done.

For this job we carry two TECNA EV charging cable retractor kits, built for electric bus and truck chargers:

  • Medium kit IB01320003, for charging cables up to 380 A. Main balancer 9702OD plus auxiliary balancer 9337OD/3 (pull force 8.8 to 13.2 lb [4 to 6 kg]).
  • Heavy kit IB01320004, for charging cables from 400 to 500 A. Main balancer 9702OD plus auxiliary balancer 9338OD/3 (pull force 13.2 to 17.6 lb [6 to 8 kg]).

Both kits share the same main balancer: 16.4 ft (5 m) of cable travel, adjustable pull force of 17.6 to 26.5 lb (8 to 12 kg), an automatic ratchet lock and progressive braking for a controlled, low-speed return. They support charging cables up to 31.2 ft (9.5 m) long, use high-strength Dyneema rope, and are rated for indoor and outdoor use from -40 to 140 F (-40 to +60 C). Cable clamps are ordered separately.

Airport ground support equipment

Electric ground support equipment and electric baggage handling systems are charged on the apron or in open-sided hangars, often overnight and in all seasons. Outdoor balancers keep those charging cables suspended and clear of tugs, loaders and foot traffic.

Car wash hose management

A car wash is about the hardest place to put a standard balancer: constant water, cleaning chemicals and road salt. An outdoor balancer supports wash and vacuum hoses overhead so they don’t drag, wear through or trip anyone, and the powder-coated housing and stainless hardware are built for that chemical exposure.

Outdoor retractor or outdoor zero-gravity balancer?

The OD line comes in two kinds, and the choice is about what you want the cable or tool to do when you let go:

  • Outdoor retractor: lighter loads. Release the connector or tool and the retractor pulls it back up to a rest position, out of the way. Typical for charging cables that should go back up after every use.
  • Outdoor zero-gravity balancer: heavier loads. The load becomes almost weightless and stays exactly where you leave it, at any height in its travel. Typical for heavy depot cables, hoses and tools the operator positions by hand.

Shop each type directly: outdoor retractors or outdoor zero-gravity balancers.

TECNA outdoor retractors: 0.44 to 30.9 lb

Four series, all with a cast aluminium powder-coated body, stainless carabiner and synthetic fibre rope:

  • 9310OD–9313OD — 0.44 to 6.6 lb (0.2–3 kg), 5.2 ft (1,600 mm) of travel, polypropylene rope. Example: TECNA 9312OD.
  • 9320OD–9323OD — 2.2 to 17.6 lb (1–8 kg), 6.6 ft (2,000 mm), polypropylene rope. Example: TECNA 9322OD.
  • 9336LOD–9340OD — 1.1 to 30.9 lb (0.5–14 kg), 8.2 ft (2,500 mm), Dyneema rope. Example: TECNA 9338OD.
  • 9346LOD–9350OD — the same capacities and travel as the 9336 series, plus an automatic ratchet lock that holds the cable at a chosen height so you can work without it pulling back. Example: TECNA 9348OD. How the lock works is explained in our ratchet lock guide.

TECNA outdoor zero-gravity balancers: 8.8 to 397 lb

TECNA 9354OD-9359OD outdoor zero-gravity balancer with OUTDOOR badge

Every outdoor zero-gravity balancer has stainless-steel wire rope, capacity adjusted with a worm screw, a lock that holds the load at any height, a taper drum on ball bearings and an upper rotary suspension with a safety hook. Pick the series by load and travel:

  • 9354OD–9359OD — 8.8 to 55 lb (4–25 kg), 6.6 ft (2,000 mm). Example: TECNA 9356OD.
  • 9520OD–9525OD — 26.5 to 154 lb (12–70 kg), 8.9 ft (2,700 mm). Example: TECNA 9522OD.
  • 9502OD–9509OD — 44 to 220 lb (20–100 kg), 6.9 ft (2,100 mm). Example: TECNA 9504OD.
  • 9361OD–9369OD — 22 to 165 lb (10–75 kg), 6.6 ft (2,000 mm), with a centrifugal safety device. Example: TECNA 9364OD.
  • 9401OD–9426OD — 33 to 397 lb (15–180 kg), 8.2 ft (2,500 mm), with a centrifugal safety device. Example: TECNA 9412OD.
  • 9431OD–9456OD — 33 to 397 lb (15–180 kg), 9.8 ft (3,000 mm), the longest travel in the line, with a centrifugal safety device. Example: TECNA 9452OD.

The centrifugal safety device locks the drum if it turns faster than a safe limit — for example if a load comes unhooked or the rope breaks.

Factory options: brake (F) and floor-level lock control (B1)

  • Option F, friction brake — a brake on the drum that controls how fast it turns, for a firmer hold on the load. Available on the 9354OD, 9502OD and 9520OD series as separate .FOD models (for example the TECNA 9354.FOD). It is fitted when the balancer is built and cannot be added later.
  • Option B1, reinforced lock with control from the floor — lets the operator lock and unlock the balancer from floor level. Available on the 9502OD, 9520OD, 9361OD and 94xx OD series; ask us when you order.

How to choose an outdoor tool balancer

  • Weigh the real load. For a charging cable or hose, that is the weight of the hanging length plus the connector or gun, not the tool alone. The load must sit inside the model’s capacity range.
  • Decide retract or float. Should it go back up when released (retractor) or stay where it is left (zero-gravity balancer)?
  • Measure the travel you need from the mounting point to the lowest working position: 5.2 ft up to 9.8 ft across the line.

Not sure? Send us the load and the travel you need and we will recommend a model.

Safety reminder: a balancer supports a tool, cable or hose that an operator is handling. It is not a hoist and must not be used for lifting loads.

Outdoor tool balancer FAQ

What is the difference between an outdoor balancer and a standard balancer?

The materials. TECNA outdoor balancers have a powder-coated aluminium housing that resists oxidation and chemical corrosion, rustproof and stainless-steel parts, a rope that does not rust (synthetic fibre or stainless wire), a stainless carabiner, and a working range of -40 °F to 140 °F. Capacities and travel match the standard models.

Can I use an outdoor balancer for EV charging cables?

Yes, EV charging is one of the main applications TECNA designed the line for, from car charging points to e-bus and e-truck depots. Size the balancer to the weight of the hanging cable plus the connector.

How cold can an outdoor tool balancer work?

Down to -40 °F (-40 °C), and up to 140 °F (+60 °C).

Is there an outdoor version of my current TECNA balancer?

Most likely. The OD line mirrors the standard 9310–9350 retractors and the 9354–9525 zero-gravity balancers; add “OD” to the model number (for example, 9322 becomes 9322OD). Each outdoor product page links back to its standard model.
