Introduction

What Is a Ratchet Lock?

A ratchet lock is a mechanical system that allows a tool retractor or balancer to lock the cable in place at a chosen length.

  • Without a ratchet lock: the retractor automatically pulls the tool back to its resting position when released.

  • With a ratchet lock: the operator can pull the cable out, let it engage the ratchet mechanism, and “freeze” the tool at a comfortable working distance.

This feature is especially useful when tools, hoses and cables need to remain suspended in position for longer periods, or if you are using it to retract a EV charging cable and you don't want the retractor to be pulling o the cable while charging.

  • Capacity: 13.2 to 17.6 lb (6 to 8 kg)
  • Cable Length: 8.2 ft (2500 mm)

Tecna 9349

  • Capacity: 17.6 to 22.0 lb (8 to 10 kg)
  • Cable Length: 8.2 ft (2500 mm)

Tecna 9350

  • Capacity: 22.0 to 30.9 lb (10 to 14 kg)
  • Cable Length: 8.2 ft (2500 mm)

Long Cable Travel Versions: 9349/4,5, 9350/4,5, etc.

While the standard Tecna models provide ample cable travel for most workstations, some environments require extra length. This is where Tecna’s /4,5 series comes in.

These models, such as the 9349/4.5 and 9350/4.5, provide nearly 15 feet of cable travel—significantly longer than standard retractors.

Kromer Locking Retractors

While Tecna provides a robust lineup, Kromer (a German manufacturer) also offers retractors with ratchet lock functionality. Known for their rugged design and precision spring systems, Kromer retractors are widely used in Europe and North America.

Ratchet Lock Functionality and Mounting Guidelines

Most ratchet locking balancers operate using a mechanism that combines gravity and centrifugal force. Because of this design, the balancer must be suspended vertically in order for the ratchet lock to function correctly. If the unit is mounted horizontally, the locking feature will not engage as intended, since the internal components rely on downward pull and rotational movement to trigger the lock. For this reason, ratchet locking balancers are best installed overhead or on a vertical support structure where tools can be retracted and locked at the proper working height.

Ratchet Lock vs. Manual Lock: What’s the Difference?

A ratchet lock works automatically through gravity and centrifugal force inside the balancer. When the operator pulls the cable slowly the ratchet engages by itself every few inches, holding the tool at that length until the cable is slightly pulled again to release it and retracted quickly. In contrast, a manual lock requires the operator to actively engage or disengage a lever, switch, or knob to fix the cable in position. While ratchet locks are faster and more convenient for repetitive tasks, manual locks provide more deliberate control in situations where tools must remain fixed for longer periods without accidental release. Ratchet locks are most popular on Spring Tool retractors where there is a constant retracting force. While manual locks are more common on Zero Gravity balancers. Although there are some exceptions.


Choosing the Right Locking Retractor

When selecting a locking retractor, consider the following:

  • Tool Weight: Each Tecna model (9346–9350) corresponds to a specific weight range.

  • Cable Travel: Choose standard or /4.5 models depending on workstation layout.

  • Locking Needs: Decide if you require the ratchet lock engaged full-time or only occasionally.

  • Durability: For continuous operation, Tecna and Kromer both offer industrial-grade reliability.

  • Environment: If tools are used in welding, painting, or dusty conditions, ensure the retractor housing is appropriate for the environment.
